Weiner Religious School

Congregation Beth Torah’s Weiner Religious School is a supplementary Jewish school for students in Pre-Kindergarten through High School, including a complete B’nai Mitzvah program. “Supplementary” means that we intend to support and expand upon the Jewish education our students receive in their homes and with their families. Our purpose is to help each student in LEARNING and DOING as a Jew.

Wonder Where Your Tzedakah Went?

Yasher Koach! Our Congregation Beth Torah Weiner Religious School families contributed nearly $4,000 in tzedakah contributions for the 2012-13 School Year.  Donations were sent to: Israel Connections (Sh’lach Manot packages for soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces), Kosher Meals on Wheels, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center: Dana Dwerk Children’s Hospital, Yachad the Kosher Food Pantry, Ahava Youth Village, Camp Rainbow, WIZO (Women’s International Zionist Organization), Leket, Society for Prevention of  Cruelty to Animals in Israel, reStart Shelter, Jewish Family Services Food Pantry.

Madrichim Program

Congregation Beth Torah’s Weiner Religious School Madrichim Program has been used as a model for other congregations around the country.  This program is open to 9th -12th grade students.

One of the most important goals of our Madrichim Program is to expose teens to the challenges and responsibilities of Jewish education by placing them in the religious school, assisting our faculty to make the Jewish education of our younger students a meaningful and pleasurable experience.  In addition to serving as a role model and helping our teachers, the Madrichim program gives you the chance to form relationships with other teens at Beth Torah who enjoy being here during religious school hours.   This group knows how to have fun while working!  Because these students serve as role models, preference is given to teens currently enrolled in the Weiner Religious School or the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy or those who have previously been confirmed.  All madrichim receive payment in the form of scholarships to be used for Jewish youth group activities (NFTY, BBYO, USY, etc), Jewish camp or an Israel trip or for community service hours.

Purim Tzedakah for IDF Soldiers

Several Weiner Religious School classes elected to send a portion of the tzedakah they collected so far this year to provide Mishlach Manot gifts for soldiers in the IDF.  This year we were able to select a specific soldier to receive our gifts.  Rachel Kaplan, niece of Janet & Mike Kaplan and cousin of 6th Grader, Tara Kaplan, was selected.  .

LEARNING

Includes the study of prayer, theology, Torah, Hebrew, holidays, Jewish thought, history, Jewish values and contemporary issues facing the Jewish community and our community at large.

DOING

Includes participation in field trips, social justice projects, holiday celebrations, worship, hands-on classroom activities and a variety of other programs and events. We also emphasize the importance of life cycle events within our tradition.

Each student at Congregation Beth Torah’s Weiner Religious School is offered the opportunity to grow as a Jew. Studies have revealed that the more quality Jewish education one receives, the better able the individual is to make critical Jewish life decisions and the better chance there is that the person will remain an active member of the Jewish community. Involvement helps foster a feeling of pride in being Jewish. We hope to set up a pattern of LEARNING and DOING that will continue throughout the life of the student.
